Most Hospital Dashboards Fail

After decades working inside a large health system, we’ve learned something uncomfortable:
Most hospital dashboards fail.
Not because the data is wrong.
Not because the tools are bad.
They fail because they answer the wrong question.
Executives don’t wake up wondering:
“How many dashboards do we have?”
They want to know:
• Why did our margin drop last month?
• Which service lines are driving cost increases?
• Where are we losing access capacity?
But many analytics teams are still stuck producing static reports rather than building tools that help leaders understand drivers and take action.
The best analytics environments I’ve seen do three things well:
1. Connect financial, operational, and clinical data in one model
2. Let leaders drill from system → hospital → department → encounter
3. Focus on decision-making, not just reporting
Healthcare has no shortage of data.
What we need more of is analytics that actually drives decisions.
At Cortex, we have decades of experience using clinical, administrative and financial data to highlight the performance opportunity that matters and drives incremental change.
